Talkshow: “Gen Z - How to Overcome Stress?”

On the afternoon of March 15, 2023, the Student Affairs Office of Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) successfully organized a talkshow titled "Gen Z - How to Overcome Stress?" which attracted more than 200 students to attend. The talkshow was attended by representatives of the Organizing Committee, including Mr. Le Quoc Bao, Deputy Head of the Student Affairs Office, university officials, and a large number of students. As for the guest speaker, Mr. Dang Trong Ngon, he is a businessman who has shared and inspired numerous students at universities. He is also a researcher and instructor of Mindfulness practice methods for businesses, community projects, and society. Furthermore, he holds records in Vietnam and Asia for his journey of "Physical well-being, - Bright mind, - High intelligence". In a warm and open atmosphere, he shared about Gen Z, the generation that has been exposed to the internet and digital technologies, with more than 50% of young people spending about 10 hours directly accessing the internet every day. He also made observations that the level of happiness in terms of emotions and social relations is lower compared to previous generations. Nearly 25% of the Gen Z respondents reported feeling more emotional distress, almost double the rate reported by those from Generation Y and Generation X. This indicates that many students are experiencing pressure and have not found effective ways to relieve their own stress due to reasons such as financial issues, health concerns, family matters, social media, and especially the immense pressure from studies. On this occasion, the speaker provided TDTU students with practical exercises such as:
Nurturing Breath: Guided Meditation directly in the Auditorium to allow students to experience relaxation through focusing on their breath. It was recommended that every 45 minutes of continuous studying or working, students should take 5 minutes to breathe deeply in order to relax, improve their mental health, and release pressure and stress.
Steps of happiness: Practicing leisurely steps on the way to school. Rushing can lead to mental tension and nervousness due to a fast heartbeat.
Carefree smiles: The students were taught to sing the song 'Nụ Cười' (Smile) as a way to practice becoming more cheerful and harmonious.
Writing a journal: Being grateful every day with a journey diary.
The final segment of the talkshow received a lot of attention from the students, with questions revolving around stress relief methods and real-life experiences from many TDTU students. Student Le Phan Viet Thy, from the Faculty of Industrial Fine Arts, shared without hesitation: “I didn't feel stressed much before, but after listening to you, I realized that sometimes I do experience stress, and I found a similar way to cope with it, like listening to music and talking to a friend. This method brings me a more positive and refreshed energy.”
Feedback from businessman Dang Trong Ngon, Founder of AN Space, after participating in the talkshow at TDTU: “After sharing with the students, I feel very happy because my desire is to empower students, the future of the world. I am delighted to work with the TDTU students and feel the energy of the youth in each student. When I meet and talk with them, I understand that even small things can cause them stress. And as long as they know methods to control their stress, their academic achievements will surely be better, and they will be ready to face challenges. In modern life, stress is seen as an unavoidable state, sometimes even playing a certain positive role in helping us overcome challenges. However, if stress overwhelms and pushes us into depression, then it is truly regrettable! Therefore, I hope that the students will apply the four methods that I introduced to overcome their stress. Best wishes to the TDTU students for their continuous improvement in learning, working more efficiently, and making a greater contribution to life.”
It is certain that after the talkshow, the students will retain valuable knowledge on stress relief methods, creating joy and enthusiasm in their studies in the most effective way.
