Topic "Compassion for yourself"
On October 11, 2024, at Hall 10F, the Student Affairs Department of Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) organized a thematic session with the theme "Compassion for oneself". The session was attended by Master Dao Thi Ngoc Mai, co-founder of Authentic Live & Learn (Live fully) and 300 TDTU students.
During the talk, Ms. Ngoc Mai helped students understand that "compassion for oneself" is not simply being gentle with oneself, but also the way we treat ourselves in the same way we want to be loved and respected by others. Not judging or blaming ourselves when facing difficulties allows each individual to maintain a stable and resilient spirit, facing the challenges of life.
Ms. Ngoc Mai also emphasized that to practice self-compassion, each person needs to clearly understand three core components: mindfulness, kindness to oneself, and human similarity.
First of all, mindfulness is the ability to recognize and observe one's own thoughts and emotions without being caught up in the vortex of judgment. A person who practices mindfulness will know how to stop at the right time, observe inner fluctuations calmly, thereby regulating emotions and maintaining balance in the mind. This helps to relieve stress, avoid letting emotions overwhelm reason and cause wrong actions.
Being kind to oneself is treating oneself with kindness and tolerance. When stumbling or failing, what is needed is not self-reproach, but encouragement and tolerance, just like the way we often do with loved ones when they face challenges. That kindness creates an environment that nurtures positive emotions, helping oneself become more steadfast in overcoming obstacles.
Finally, the commonality of humanity helps us realize that everyone in the world has also experienced difficult times, things that are not perfect. When we realize this similarity, we will feel less lonely in our journey, easily accept ourselves and forgive past mistakes. That opens up a new journey, where continuous efforts are cultivated, and self-compassion deepens every day.
The seminar ended with many valuable lessons in the minds of each student about self-compassion. This is a journey of self-discovery and self-esteem, helping you become stronger when facing challenges, knowing how to love and truly connect with yourself.
